I’ve got my DOT Number, now what? A Step-by-Step Guide for new truck drivers

mc number

Once your trucking company has received its DOT number, you’re not far from launching your operations. Here’s a quick guide to help you activate your MC (Motor Carrier) number:

Step 1: Apply for MC Number
Start by submitting your application through the FMCSA’s Unified Registration System (URS). You’ll also need to pay the $300 non-refundable fee for the MC number.

Step 2: Wait for the 21-Day Public Review Period
FMCSA requires a mandatory 21-day vetting period before your MC number is activated. Use this time to complete the next steps in the process.

Step 3: Obtain BOC-3 (Process Agent Filing)
Hire a registered process agent to file the BOC-3 form electronically with FMCSA. This is a necessary step for legal purposes.

Step 4: Driver Qualification
Organize and file the necessary documentation in preparation for the New Entrant Safety Audit, which occurs within the first 18 months of operating.

Step 5: Enroll in a Drug & Alcohol Consortium (For CDL Drivers Only)
If you’re operating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) over 26,001 lbs, enroll in a DOT-approved Drug & Alcohol Testing Program. Pre-employment drug testing is required for all drivers.

Step 6: Register for UCR (Unified Carrier Registration)
Register under UCR based on the number of trucks in your fleet. The fees vary depending on fleet size.

Step 7: Apply for an IFTA Account
If you’re operating interstate and using fuel taxed at the pump, apply for an International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) license and decals through your state.

Step 8: Get an IRP (International Registration Plan) Plate
Register with your state’s IRP office to obtain an apportioned plate for your truck if you’re operating interstate.

Step 9: Secure Insurance Coverage
Contact an insurance provider to secure the necessary coverage, including Public Liability Insurance (minimum $750,000 – $1,000,000) and Cargo Insurance. Ensure your insurer submits Form BMC-91X to FMCSA.

Step 10: Get an ELD (Electronic Logging Device)
Register with an ELD provider to comply with FMCSA’s Hours of Service regulations.

Step 11: Register with a Factoring Company
Register with a factoring company to ensure seamless payments and cash flow for your business.

Step 12: Register with a Dispatcher
Once you’re ready, partner with a dispatch provider to start receiving consistent loads once your MC is active.

Step 13: MC Number Becomes Active
After the 21-day review, verification of BOC-3 and insurance, and all fees paid, FMCSA will activate your MC number.

Following these steps ensures you’re ready to hit the road with your trucking business in full compliance with FMCSA requirements. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
