Description
The FMCSA Biennial Update, also known as the MCS-150 update, is a mandatory requirement for all motor carriers operating under the jurisdiction of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This update is crucial for maintaining an active USDOT number and ensuring that the FMCSA has accurate and up-to-date information about the carrier’s operations.
What is the MCS-150?
The MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) is the form used to collect essential details about a motor carrier’s business. This includes:
Company contact information
Fleet size and classification
Type of operation (e.g., for-hire, private, exempt)
Hazmat transportation status
Vehicle mileage and cargo classifications
How Often is it Required?
The update must be filed every two years, even if there have been no changes to your business information. The due date is based on the last two digits of your USDOT number:
The second-to-last digit determines the month
The last digit determines the year (odd/even) you must file in
Failure to file the update on time can result in:
Deactivation of your USDOT number
Civil penalties of up to $1,324 per day, with a maximum of $12,968
Who Must File?
All entities with an active USDOT number must file the MCS-150 update, including:
Interstate and intrastate carriers
Private carriers
For-hire carriers
Brokers and freight forwarders (as applicable)
